Where to Keep Your Savings

Not all savings have the same job

"Where should I keep my money?" has no single answer because savings have different jobs. Money you might need next week has a different home than money for a goal three years away. Thinking in layers of access beats hunting for one perfect account.

The three layers

Layer 1 — everyday buffer: your current account plus a small cushion. Instant access, earns almost nothing, and that is fine — its job is liquidity.

Layer 2 — emergency fund and short-term goals: a separate savings account (ideally a high-yield digital bank account) or a money-market-style fund. Reachable in a day, earning something meaningful, protected from impulse by being one step away.

Layer 3 — money with years of runway: fixed deposits ladder, and beyond that the world of investing (a later track). Locking money you truly will not need buys a better rate.

Two protections worth knowing

In Malaysia, deposits at member banks are protected by PIDM up to RM250,000 per depositor per bank — spreading very large savings across banks extends that protection. And a note on the classic mistake: keeping the emergency fund invested in shares or unit trusts. The whole point of Layer 2 is that its value does not depend on market conditions on the day you need it.

Quick check

1. The main job of your everyday buffer (Layer 1) is:
Each layer has one job. Layer 1 buys convenience; chasing yield there fights its purpose.
2. PIDM protection covers deposits up to:
Per depositor, per member bank — which is why very large cash holdings are sometimes spread across institutions.
3. Why should the emergency fund not live in shares?
Emergencies and market dips like to arrive together. Layer 2 exists to be boring and dependable.
