Nisab is 20 dinar of gold (85 g) or 200 dirham of silver (595 g). Malaysian authorities determine obligation using the gold standard. The silver nisab is far lower, and some scholars elsewhere prefer it so that more payers qualify and more recipients benefit — it is shown here for context, not as an alternative ruling.

This is an educational estimate using the common 2.5% methodology. Nisab values, categories, and calculation methods vary by state — always confirm with your state zakat authority (e.g. PPZ-MAIWP, LZS) before paying. This is not a religious ruling.

Common questions

How is zakat on wealth calculated?

Zakat on wealth is generally assessed at 2.5% of qualifying assets held for one lunar year (haul), provided the total exceeds the nisab threshold. Qualifying assets typically include cash, savings, gold and silver, and business assets, with certain debts deductible. Treatments differ between states and schools of thought — confirm with your state zakat authority.

What is nisab and how do I find the current figure?

Nisab is the minimum wealth at which zakat becomes obligatory. It is defined by weight of metal, not by a ringgit amount: 20 dinar of gold (85 grams) or 200 dirham of silver (595 grams). The ringgit value therefore moves with the metal price. Malaysian state authorities each publish an official figure, revised roughly every six months — check PPZ-MAIWP for the Federal Territories or your own state authority, such as LZS in Selangor.

Why does nisab differ between Malaysian states?

Each state's zakat authority sets its own gold reference price, so the published nisab differs even though the underlying weight is identical everywhere. For 2026 the Federal Territories figure is RM33,996 while Selangor's for January to June is RM42,047 — a gap of over RM8,000. That difference can decide whether you are obliged to pay at all, so always use the figure published by the authority for the state where you reside.

Should I use the gold or the silver nisab?

Malaysian authorities determine obligation using the gold standard of 85 grams. The silver nisab of 595 grams works out far lower — roughly a tenth — and some scholars outside Malaysia prefer it on the grounds that a lower threshold brings more payers into obligation and so benefits more recipients. Both are shown here for context, but follow your state authority.

What is the difference between zakat on income and zakat on savings?

Zakat on income (zakat pendapatan) is assessed on qualifying earnings, often paid through monthly salary deduction, while zakat on savings is assessed on wealth held for a full lunar year. The two are calculated differently and the rules vary by state. Your state authority can tell you which applies to your circumstances and how to avoid paying twice on the same wealth.

Can zakat be claimed against income tax in Malaysia?

Zakat paid to an approved authority is generally treated as a rebate against Malaysian income tax rather than a deduction from income, which makes it considerably more valuable than a standard relief. The rules and limits are set by LHDN and can change — keep your official zakat receipts and confirm the current treatment when filing.

Is this calculator a religious ruling?

No. This tool is an educational estimate based on the commonly applied 2.5% rate and a nisab figure we publish with its date. It is not a fatwa and does not account for every asset type or every state's methodology. Always confirm your final obligation with your state zakat authority before paying.
