Common questions

What is the difference between the snowball and avalanche methods?

The avalanche method targets the highest interest rate first and costs the least in total interest. The snowball method targets the smallest balance first, producing quick wins that help people stay with the plan. Avalanche wins on arithmetic; snowball wins on psychology. The difference in total cost is often smaller than people expect, so the method you will actually finish is usually the right one.

Should I consolidate my debts?

Consolidation helps only if the new effective rate — including fees — is genuinely lower and you stop adding new debt. Watch for balance-transfer offers that revert to a high rate after the promotional period, and for consolidation loans that lower the monthly payment simply by stretching the term, which increases total interest paid.

What should I do if I cannot keep up with repayments in Malaysia?

Contact your lender before you miss a payment — restructuring is far easier to arrange from a current account than a defaulted one. AKPK (Agensi Kaunseling dan Pengurusan Kredit), set up by Bank Negara Malaysia, offers free credit counselling and a debt management programme. Their help costs nothing; avoid any private firm that charges upfront fees to negotiate on your behalf.
