Common questions

How much should I save each month to reach a goal?

Divide the shortfall by the number of months, then adjust downward for any return you expect to earn. For a goal under three years, assume little or no growth and keep the money in cash — you cannot afford a market drop just before you need it. For goals beyond five years, a modest expected return meaningfully reduces the required monthly amount.

Should I save for a goal or pay off debt first?

Compare the interest rate on the debt with the return you would realistically earn. Credit card debt at 15–18% beats almost any investment return, so clearing it first is close to a risk-free gain. The exception is a starter emergency fund — build roughly RM1,000 first, otherwise the next surprise simply puts the debt straight back.

Where should short-term savings be kept?

Somewhere stable and reachable: a separate savings account, a fixed deposit matched to your timeline, or a money-market fund. The goal is capital preservation, not return. Keeping it at a different bank from your daily account adds just enough friction to stop casual withdrawals.
