Tabung Haji and Planning for Hajj
One institution, two jobs
Tabung Haji is unique: simultaneously a shariah-compliant savings institution and the official gateway to hajj registration for Malaysians. Deposits earn annual hibah (profit distribution), the institution manages the national hajj queue, and savings there mark your place in it. Registration requires only a modest minimum balance — and since the queue is measured in decades, the single most important hajj-planning act is registering early, even for children.
The two-account reality of hajj planning
Practical hajj planning has two funding layers: the Tabung Haji balance (queue position plus the base cost, which TH subsidises for first-time pilgrims within quota), and everything else — the higher costs of private packages if you go outside the standard quota, plus preparation, gear, and income replacement during the pilgrimage. Treat the second layer as a classic long-horizon savings goal from our earlier lessons: known target, known (approximate) date, automated monthly transfers. The Savings Goal Planner fits this perfectly.
Legacy connections
Two estate links worth knowing. Tabung Haji supports nomination (penama) — and as the next lesson explains, the nominee\'s role interacts with faraid in a specific way worth understanding. And where hajj was intended but not performed, families sometimes fund badal hajj (proxy pilgrimage) from the estate — a wish far easier to honour when written in a wasiat than when guessed at during grief. Small documentation, large mercy.
